Learning Journeys presents a message about the power of learning in the race for success, with personal stories from prominent management thinkers and change agents. It offers lessons reflecting key learning moments in life and career. Presenting thirty-seven provocative essays, most written expressly for this book, Learning Journeys offers rich lessons on learning to lead, overcoming setbacks, becoming open to change, mentoring, developing self-awareness, and more.

Each essay includes questions for reflection to help readers apply the lessons learned to their own lives and careers. The book also offers suggestions for using the stories in training workshops and ideas for making more effective use of your own and others' stories in mentoring and leading.

Book Page, October 2000
Accomplishes in 37 short chapters what a whole volume of MBA texts cannot tell you: leadership is a life-long process.

"Learning Journeys makes the power of storytelling come alive. These stories need to be told--and must be told--but more importantly, they should be shared in corporations throughout the world to enhance leadership and management. The stories alone are worth the price of the book, but the exercises and implementation ideas make this book invaluable."--Jimmy Neil Smith, President, Storytelling Foundation International

"To reflect the wisdom in these pages, this book should be embossed with gold, wrapped in silk, and kept in a box of the finest mahogany--it is that valuable."--Annette Simmons, President, Group Process Consulting; author of A Safe Place for Dangerous Truths and Territorial Games AFTERWORD: The Power of Stories, by Richard Stone

From the Author

For over 20 years now, we have devoted our life's work to helping individuals in organizations achieve positive change for themselves and their people. We have also shared a dream to create a body of work that would contribute to the development of future leaders. Thus came the idea for "Learning Journeys."

This book was inspired from our collaboration with a group of business-book authors and consultants called the "Learning Network," who meet once a year to learn from one another and configure ways to "give back" to society.

In the course of our work together we have often asked ourselves, "Why is it that certain individuals achieve the success they desire and become great mentors & leaders, while others never reach their full potential?" In our quest to answer this enduring question, we have asked tody's most successful leadership experts and top thought leaders in the field of management and organization development to share their personal stories about what it takes to achieve success.

The result is the compilation of personal essays included in Learning Journeys. These amazing and intimate stories about childhood experiences, school life, friendship and marriage, sports, and careers and business, offer rich lessons on learning to lead, overcoming setbacks, becoming open to change, mentoring, developing self-awareness, and more.

As you read and enjoy this book, we hope it too will help you examine and learn from experiences that have made up your own learning yourney.

-Marshall Goldsmith & Beverly Kaye
